What’s this?

The middle weekly pay, before tax, of people working full time: half earn more, half earn less. Cash terms, not adjusted for prices.

Questions people ask

What is the average salary in the UK?

The median full-time wage is about £39,900 a year (£767 a week) before tax, in 2025. The median is the middle value, which is usually lower than the mean because a few very high earners pull the mean up.

What is the difference between the median and the mean?

The median is the pay of the person in the middle if everyone is lined up from lowest to highest. The mean adds everything up and divides by the number of people, so it is pulled up by high earners.

Has pay kept up with prices?

Between 2002 and 2025, typical full-time pay rose 96% in cash terms while prices rose 86%. Try the prices tool →

Does this include part-time workers?

No. The figure is for full-time employees only, so it is higher than pay across all workers.
